The Net Zero Schools Design Studio is an innovative course that seamlessly integrates architecture with sustainability, to design the educational spaces of tomorrow—net-zero energy buildings that are resilient, sustainable, and conducive to learning. We explored the challenges posed by climate change and resource scarcity, addressing them through the use of alternative materials, renewable energy systems, and advanced modeling software.

One of the primary goals for the studio is to design a net-zero school that goes beyond traditional functions by allowing the school to become a third form of education for the students. The design is inspired by the structure of a mangrove tree, with its roots symbolizing how the buildings are grounded to the site, and its leaves representing the parks on the roofs—spaces that are accessible to the broader community. We aimed to not only enhance individual creativity but also foster collective problem-solving to create net-zero educational spaces that integrate seamlessly with the environment.
